A question all families of loss ask themselves the day after the funeral. Family members are going back to work. The house is a mess. You have no energy and find Who Is Albertus Magnus? One of the greatest saints in the History of the intellectual tradition of the Church is St.
Thomas Aquinas. The Angelic Doctor, however, did not arise from a vacuum. Even the greatest teachers once had great teachers. The most famous teacher Are you ready for Advent? Before you know it, it will be here! This year, Advent begins on November 28 and will end Friday, December Take the time now to prepare a plan that will help you prepare the way for the birth of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is estimated that 1 in 6 couples struggle to get pregnant. A self-proclaimed geek, Alex studied both physics and pharmacy at university and now works in healthcare.
There are still some with self respect. Modesty is not a question of how much skin shows. If it were, Muslim women wearing burkas would all be more modest than non-Muslim women and men who don't wear them. John T. Malloy wrote a book called Dress for Success. The thrust of the book is to dress in a way that gets you favorable attention from your boss, customers, girlfriend, etc. I followed the advice and it helped me get a better job.
Was I dressing modestly? NO WAY! I was dressing to be favorably noticed. So even though a button-up shirt covered slightly more skin than a tee shirt, it was less modest.
Is a person more modest in January because he wears a coat and gloves than he is in July wearing a short sleeved shirt? Is a motorcyclist wearing a leather jacket more modest than a pedestrian wearing a cotton shirt?
Something s to think about. Rebecca , December 19, AM. Modestly is about showing who you are on the inside. Its about representing yourself, not as a body and an "object" to use this applies to girls but rather as a person with self respect and integrity. A person who sees themselves as a capable individual rather than a nice and attractive body.
Therefore a girls modesty is seen in the way she dresses. Someone who wants to be seen as a person, will cover their body in a respectful manner. Unfortunately, as seen so often in todays society, a girl who wants attention, will show off her body.
When a young lady is applying for a prestigious job, she is not wearing a mini skirt and tank top. Because she does not want to be seen as a body, she wants to be seen as the bright and capable person she is.
Anonymous , January 15, AM. Anonymous , August 26, PM. So whether a woman is considered an object or not is dictated completely by the amount of clothing she is wearing? What is the stand-by definition of "modest", is there a dress code I'm missing out on? I dress modestly because I want to honour God with my body and how I present myself, not because I underestimate the self-control men should have.
I have never put the burden of being objectified on my shoulders. Men objectify women and women objectify men by seeing the opposite gender as a sexual body rather than a human. With your attitude it is also a woman's responsibility to prevent rape rather than the male's responsibility NOT to rape. This way of thinking perpetuates rape culture.
I find it hard to believe that someone can be offended by this. Let's be honest. Yes, unfortunately in our society young girls-- and NOT such young girls!! Please, just look around at how women dress. And by the way I'm a woman. I think this video is great!!! I enjoyed it and can't wait to show my daughter, I know she will enjoy it as well. I think It's nice to see men agreeing that modesty is beautiful!! It's encouraging! I think that this video is completely missing the boat, sends out a very confusing message to young girls, and is actually quite offensive.
It is degrading. It suggests that women must listen to the advice given to them by men, who know better than them. Where are the female role models in the video? Cause guess what? Women are more than animals who are hard wired to respond to attractive young males. Finally, the idea that women need and yearn for men to say 'you're beautiful' as if that's what our self confidence and self esteem relies on, quite frankly, is rubbish. I hope that you publish this comment, proving that you at least respect freedom of expression, and are up for debate and open minded.
J , October 16, AM. I am a man and I agree with the first par of your comment. As for the second part from "Women are more than animals" , being familiar with the Aish site, I know that no one there thinks of women as animals and no one there believes that the only thing women "need and yearn for" is for men to tell them "Baby, you're beautiful".
But you're right, that's what the video seems to say, though I believe that is not what it's willing to say. The message of the vido is a good one, but obviously the way in which it is conveyed is not good and the video misses in my humble opinion its goal.
But if you get a look at the other videos, or at the articles, that can be found on the site, you will see what the message Aish is trying to convey truly is It's not a perfect video but i does convey a good message that applies equally to men and women. Men also need to be modest! I think it's an effective video for reaching young people. Anonymous , October 16, PM. A lack of love and affection and basic kindness is why these girls turn to undressing their bodies and baring their souls R , October 16, PM.
Maybe the reason this is a message from me is that these men were trying to counteract the guys who are telling women that they will be liked only if they are "sexy.
And if a video from women would tell them otherwise, they would still worry if men would agree with the request for modesty. Jay , October 17, PM. I'll take this video over the thousands of trashy videos that are so readily available on MTV etc.. Our Hollywood culture has created a monster and I find this refreshingly appropriate for a change. On the contrary, it is those trashy pornographically laden videos that demean women! I thought it was great and I would like to see more videos that promote healthy values whether it's done by women or men!
Kathy , October 17, PM. What are you talking about??? You clearly missed the point of this song The boys in this video are saying that the girls are beautiful when modest and virtuous, not dressed like sluts. They are beautiful for their minds, not their bodies. Maybe you should read the subtitles, you missed the message the first time. Ryan , October 18, AM. I dont know how any of you can disagree with the message in this video. Its clearly aimed at a generation of women who have lost the plot in terms of self respect and modesty.
I am so embarrassed for them. Girls are revealing more and more and feel no shame whatsoever. Skirts are being hiked up more and more and necklines are being confused with waist lines. The 'role models' you speak of are indeed part of the problem. They are movie and rock stars who continue to break the boundaries for much desired shock value.
Anonymous , October 18, PM. I go to a public university, and I don't care which gender my professor is, knowledge is knowledge and that shouldn't make a difference as to who is giving it.
It is not degrading to women. The pt of the video is that it's a catchy video that people will listen to and share with others because of its uniqueness. If the vid was some women dressed from head to toe and covering her hair, talking about the importance of modesty, let's be real, it would not work as well.
That's just a fact from marketing. What will the viewers look at. This is just a smart way to portray a message. If that is so, let them dress how they want, however immodestly that my be. The pt is is that women r more than objects for men to stare at on the street, hence what ppl r looking at is not aesthetic beauty, but the inner beauty.
But this notion that just because men are portraying the message means it's belittling is utter nonsense. The enemy of our soul is trying so hard to tear us all down, by feeding with SO much trash of what makes us truly attractive to one another. Thank you for standing up and taking back what has been robbed from young men and women - their self worth and integrity!
I first thought this was a Maccabeats video it is similar to their style, even voice! The performers didn't look familiar Up beat song promoting tzniut - what could be bad? Not very respectful. All people should dress and act with dignity, boys included. I find it interesting that these guys felt they had to dress modestly to make their point.
Guys listen up: skin tight pants or pants falling down do that your underwear is showing while waddling around like a baby with a load on his diaper to keep your pants from falling all the way down is NOT attractive People respect you when you respect yourself.
Like attracts like. Listen up girls. I have sons and this needs to be passed along. Thank you so much. Mormons and Jews have something in common. We could use some more of this, natural allies working together to make a better world.
Chava , October 15, PM. While Mormons have wonderful family values, and do appreciate modesty, that is where the line is drawn on what I as a Jewish woman have in common with them. They are a very large, modern day cult. They have great PR trying to mask what they're true beliefs and history is.
